What is this sale?
[]
It is a once a year opportunity to buy the medical equipment you will use from medical school onward at rock-bottom prices. You will be able to buy your equipment and take it right home. Should we run out of an item, we will quickly reorder it for you and you'll receive it in about three weeks after the sale.
When can I buy my equipment?
[]
Monday, August 28th through Friday, September 15th, 2006.
The Bookstore's hours are: Mon-Fri 8 am - 6 pm, Saturday 10 am - 5 pm. We are closed Sundays prior to September 17th and holidays.
Where do I go to get the instruments?
[]
At the Medical Instrument Counter in the Bookstore, right next to where your textbooks are stocked.
Can I charge the equipment to my student account?
[]
Yes.
Can we meet with the equipment manufacturer's Representatives?
[]
Representatives from the two manufacturers, Welch Allyn and Littmann, will be available during Infoquest on August 30th and during the Activities Fair on September 8th to answer questions and demonstrate the use of their equipment. It's a nice way to meet with the manufacturers and clarify a lot of common questions and concerns.
What do I need to order this year and when will I start using this equipment?
[]
A diagnostic set, a stethoscope, sphygmomanometers and a neurology kit. The equipment has been pre-selected to include instruments appropriate for doctors and medical students. The equipment on the list has been approved by the Dean of Students. Your first year financial aid includes an allowance for this equipment purchased at the sale prices. You will start using the equipment in the winter quarter in the first year, and in the summer by those working on ISP or NIH research projects. Those of you who will be volunteering in the Free Clinic will want your equipment right away.

How is the pricing?
[]
You get a huge discount below list prices, because of the special prices we have negotiated for UCSD students. This program is limited to medical students at UCSD and is available to you all 4 years that you are a student here at UCSD. It's the only time in your career that you'll get this type of pricing and it takes place every year in September. Buying from UCSD Bookstore has it advantages: our great repair and loaner program, Welch Allyn discount coupons, a great trade-up program from Welch Allyn if they introduce new up-grades on equipment, just to name a few. We will be offering an extra discount on the Littmann Cardiology III stethoscope come into the store for details. View pricing.
Can I try out the equipment first?
[]
Yes. We encourage you to listen to the stethoscopes and handle the diagnostic equipment to decide what best meets your needs and personal preferences. Come to the Instruments Counter as often as you like until you feel comfortable making a decision. All our staff are trained in the specialized knowledge needed to answer your questions.
When is a good time to come by the Bookstore to try out the equipment?
[]
We encourage you to take your time before making a final decision, but we also advise you to come in well before the deadline on Friday, September 15th to avoid lines and waiting. Keep in mind that everyone will have the same breaks and lunches, so please don't wait until the last minute if you need some personal attention.
What is the Repair / Loaner Program?
[]
In case your Welch Allyn, Tycos or Littmann equipment breaks or malfunctions, we will either repair it or send it to the manufacturer to have it repaired. In the meantime, we'll loan you one of ours! The program lasts the entire four years you are in medical school, so you'll never have to worry about being caught without your instruments. The Repair / Loaner program only applies to equipment purchased during the Annual Instrument Sale at the Bookstore, and it doesn't cover theft or lost parts. This service is unique to the UCSD Bookstore and not available with on-line vendors.

Answers to common product-related questions:
What are the differences among the stethoscopes?
[]
Ultimately, it ends up being an individual decision based on how you evaluate the following issues: The degree of convertibility to pediatrics, your hearing, the angle of your ear canal and how well the stethoscope fits, and the weight of the stethoscope. It's best to keep these issues in mind and take your time listening to the stethoscopes before you finalize your decision. The fit really does matter in the quality of sound for each individual. Both brands will include with your stethoscope purchase a free auscultation audio cd, extra ear tips and a name tag. Tycos stethoscopes will have a free pediatric bonus pack.
What is a Sphygmomanometer?
[]
This is the instrument that is used to measure blood pressure. All clinical settings have either a wall unit or a hand unit. It is vitally important to be well trained in blood pressure measurement technique and to have an accurate, reliable instrument to properly diagnose hypertension. You will need one to practice with in your "Clinical Medicine" class and also to practice at home with family and friends. View picture.
What's in a diagnostic set?
[]
The diagnostic set includes: an Otoscope (to examine ears), an Ophthalmoscope (to examine the eye, especially the retina), a convertible NiCad handle, and a soft case. All sets fit in your jacket pockets or can be attached to a belt. The Classic 3.5v set includes a throat illuminator that is needed if you ever plan to add accessories such as a nasal illuminator or a transilluminator (for sinuses). The throat illuminator can also be used as a penlight. View picture.
What is a Smart Set?
[]
It is a 3.5v diagnostic set that features a lithium ion power handle. This handle has been developed to let you combine the power and quality optics of a traditional 3.5v set with the low weight of a 2.5v pocket set. The slender lithium ion handle weighs just half as much as a traditional handle, and lasts twice as long on one charge. View picture.
What is the PanOptic Ophthalmoscope?
[]
This is a new revolutionary Opthalmoscope head it is used on a 3.5 handle. This scope allows you a 5X larger view of the fundus vs. standard scopes in an undilated eye. The greater working distance improves comfort for the practitioner and the patient. Come in and try out the new PanOptic. It is very impressive. Welch Allyn is offering the coaxial opthalmoscope head at a low price for those who are purchasing the PanOptic this offer is exclusive to UCSD Bookstore and not available on line. For those students who already have a 3.5 diagnostic set, Welch Allyn is offering a trade-in program. Ask at the store for details. View picture.
What is the MacroView Otoscope?
[]
Welch Allyn has up-dated their otoscope in looks and technology. The MacroView Otoscope delivers almost twice the field of view at higher magnification compared to standard otoscopes, making it easier to visualize the auditory canal and tympanic membrane. This instrument is a significant advance in hand-held otoscopy, providing an improved view for enhanced learning and decision making. View picture.
